Hello. I'm Allison McNair. This Tuesday, New Hampshire voters go to the polls and choose the next governor, united states senator and two members of the house of representatives. They'll also elect members of hundreds of statewide offices. To help make those choices more informed, we've put together this election special. For the next 90 minutes we're going to bring you profiles of the candidates in the key races. We begin with Richard Ager and the race for Governor. |

Soundup: Swett announcement tape 12:28:10 Today, with a deep sense of humility, gratitude and optimism I pledge my very best to help all New Hampshire families live the American Dream. . Track: For Katrina Swett, the American Dream has been a lifelong reality that has shaped her life and beliefs. Bite: Democratic unity tape 2 02;23:14 As many of you know, my parents came here as penniless immigrants. This country gave them a chance. They came here and they found open doors of opportunity. They were able to walk through those doors and build a decent life. Track: Katrina's parents survived Nazi-ism and later escaped communist Hungary. Her father, Tom Lantos, became a powerful Congressman and still serves. Every day, there were lessons on what in meant to be in America, for example, when shopping… Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 2 00:57:00 ….my mother would very often stop and say, look at this abundance. Think about the fact that if we take three packages of macaroni or four jars of spaghetti sauce, it doesn't mean that we're depriving our neighbors of getting what they need. And so there was a tremendous awareness of what it meant to grow up in this society, of how fortunate we were to have those opportunities, those freedoms, those constitutional protections. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 2 00:34:55 I'm an attorney - I worked in Washington many years ago as deputy counsel to the Senate judiciary criminal justice subcommittee, so I've worked down in Washington, I know how it works but I've also been the mother of 7 children… Soundup: LPA 422 00:03;30 Katrina lifts the kids at victory Track: Katrina is married to Dick Swett who won election from the 2nd Congressional District in 1990 and 92. In 1994, he lost to Republican Charlie Bass. 8 years later, Katrina is trying to win back the seat. Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:28:44 HOW PERSONAL IS THIS? It's not personal for me as it relates to Charlie Bass. I'm running because of the things that I believe in and the things I want to go and fight for. NEW BITE: Swett announcement tape 12:29:10 As a matter of fact she's much better looking, more articulate, and I think the issues with the campaign this year are gonna be much more orientated of someone of her background. I think that being a woman is going to be an advantage for her. So I think from all of those perspectives she's in a good position right now, and it's my turn to stay home to make sure the table's set, the food's on the plate, and the bills are paid Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 1 00:01:13 I don't think Sandy has a soccer game today, but Atty has football so if you could cover… Track: Over the past 6 months, Katrina has visited every community in District 2 from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border in a car she calls "The Green Monster." Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 1 00;08:16 Wow - this is impressive. Track: On this day, she visited Southeastern Container in Hudson. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 1 00:09;18 This is an incredible facility you guys have here. "We make a lot of bottles here." "It's amazing - I was impressed by the banner - 80 million." Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 1 00:11:50 finished bottles coming out of machine Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 1 00;05:04 "Are you recently out of school?" "I went for a year and a half - going to go back." "We have a tuition program so we're hoping she'll go back - that'll help pay for her college." "That is fantastic. Those are the kinds of programs we need to encourage. In fact, one of my education proposals is to give a refundable tax credit to businesses that help their employees further their education." Video; Katrina @ BAE tape 12;01:45 guy doing intricate wiring Soundup: Katrina @ BAE tape 12:01:15 What you guys are doing here is very important. Track: At defense contractor BAE Systems, Swett made clear that homeland security is her top issue - and that President Bush is on the right path. Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:30:20 I think he's right in that we need to bring about a regime change in Iraq. They do pose a threat to us and the development of weapons of mass destruction by a brutal and unpredictable leader like Saddam Hussein is unacceptable. Track: Swett says she didn't like the President's tax cuts, but…. Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:18:13 I don't favor a rollback of those tax cuts. We're in the middle of a recession or weak recovery, and I think that increasing taxes is the wrong thing to do at a time of recession. We want to stimulate the economy. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:34:10 and my oldest daughter Chelsea has taken a semester off from college to help with the kids… Track: Katrina does attack the Republicans on proposals to privatize Social Security. Bite: Swett announcement tape 12:18:27 During the stock market boom, the idea sounded somewhat appealing. "Let's let folks take a portion of their Social Security funds and invest them in high yield stocks, - like for example, Enron, and when it is time to retire they will be better off. " Right? WRONG! I strongly believe that Republican proposals to privatize Social Security will weaken the safety net that supports so many - particularly for those who most desperately depend on it. Track: And she calls for a prescription drug benefit through medicare. NEW BITE: Katrina campaigns tape 2 01:03:25 ….then you have the bargaining power of 40 million medicare recipients which is a pretty hefty bargaining power, that you can bring to bear on these costs. Bite: Katrina campaigns tape 2 01:04:14 I also think we should close patent law loopholes that my opponent favors keeping open, which enable the pharmaceutical companies to unfairly extend the life of their patents. Track: Swett says any society should be judged on how it treats its old - and its young. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 2 00:42:32 **I'm going to be a girl for Halloween. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 2 00:42:53 I came today to read you a book - would you like to read a story together… Bite: Swett announcement tape 12:16:15 America's teachers are no less important. I will fight for a program that provides college scholarships to qualified young people in exchange for a multi-year commitment to work as teachers in needy communities after their graduation. NEW BITE: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:07:54 WHAT KIND OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE? I think a very important next step would be to rein in for campaigns and candidates, the incredible cost of TV and radio. That is still for most campaigns the single biggest portion of their budget. And so I favor a proposal that would require broadcasters to provide free time to bonafide candidates. You would need criteria to establish the legitimacy of the candidacy. You know, they are using our public airwaves. They are licensed to use them and part of that license carries with it an obligation to do programming that benefits the public. Soundup: Democratic unity tape 2 02;18:30 What time is it? GAMETIME! Track: For NH Outlook, I'm Richard Ager. Soundup: Katrina campaigns tape 3 01:35:50 *** "I want your vote, so play bingo. Thank you all, it's been wonderful to see you. Bye bye." - bingo reels starts… |

Also on the ballot this Tuesday, Questions 1 and 2. Question 1 seeks to amend the constitution. It reads as follows: Are you in favor of amending article 73-a of the second part of the constitution to read as follows: "The chief justice of the supreme court shall be the administrative head of all the courts. The chief justice shall, with the concurrence of a majority of the supreme court justices, have the power by rule to regulate the security and administration of, and the practice, procedure, and rules of evidence in, all courts in the state. The rules so adopted shall have the force and effect of law. The general court may also regulate these matters by statute provided that the general court shall have no authority to abridge the necessary adjudicatory functions for which the courts were created. In the event of a conflict between a statute and a rule, the statute shall supersede the rule, if not contrary to the provisions of the constitution." This was passed by the house 290 to 48 and the Senate 16 to 7. |
